Developed to re-supply stug batteries, the Sd.Kfz 252 was the second of the '250' family into production, following the Sd.Kfz 253 Artillery Observation vehicle.

The initial production batch of 30 vehicles was completed by August 1940 and a total of 413 had been built by the time production ceased in September 1941. Some were still in service at the war's end. Crew 2.
