In July 1939, 275 were ordered straight from the drawing board and the first vehicle was delivered for trials in May 1940.   It proved to be mechanically reliable and a stable gun platform and service deliveries started later that year.   8th Army tank brigades started receiving Valentines in June 1941 and they went on to play an important part in the remainder of the desert fighting.
