The M2 series of half-tracks were intended as armoured gun tractors, combat and recce vehicles. M2 production started in May 1941 and 11415 had been built when it was switched to the M2A1 in September 1943. 1643 had been built when production ended in March 1944 and a further 1266 M2s were converted to M2A1s.
Both vehicles had seating for ten crew and featured two large ammo storage compartments accessible from outside the vehicle. In the M2A1, the skate rail MG mounting of the M2 was replaced by an armoured mount for the .50 cal. and three pintle socket mounts for the .30 cal. also carried.
