The appearance of the T-34 and KV-1 tanks came as a nasty surprise the the Germans invading Russia. They urgently needed better ant-tank guns and decided to re-chamber some of the large numbers of Russian 76.2mm field guns that they had captured to take Pak 40 ammunition and mount them on a variety of sel-propelled chassis - here the Panzer II Ausf.D. Around 200 were built from April 1942. Most served on the Eastern Front, but some were stationed in France.
