In the summer of 1944, the only American gun capable of defeating the heavier German armour was the 90mm anti-aircraft gun, M1. In July 1944 a modified version of this gun was mounted in an open-topped turret and fitted to the chassis of the M10A1 tank destroyer - and hurriedly standardised as the M36. 1200 M10A1s had been converted when production ceased in 1945.
