Analysis of the Battle of Kursk showed that the T-34 needed to be able to defeat the thicker German Armour from a longer range. There were three different 85mm gun options, but none would fit into the existing turret, so a new 3-man turret was designed. The ZIS-53 gun was chosen but needed design modifications to make it mate with the new turret. As an interim measure, the Soviets decided to start T-34/85 production with the D-5T gun that had come a close second in trials. T-34/85 Model 1943s started coming off the production line in January 1944. Two months later, production switched to the Model 1944 with the ZIS-53 gun.
