Classified as a Camionette (means "small" van) by the French, The Citroen type 23 was first produced in 1935. Powered by their own 1911cc, 50 bhp. engine with rear-wheel drive only, it had a cargo-carrying capacity of 1.5 tons. Alternatively, it could be used to carry ten fully equipped troops.
Over 13000 left the production line between October 1939 and May 1940, making it, by far, the most-produced French truck (of any size) of the period. A lot of these fell into German hands and the type 23 was extensively used by them. 3700 of a longer wheel-based version (type RU) were built for the Wehrmacht from 1941-44.
