8th Army Tank Brigades started receiving Valentines in June 1941 and they went on to play an important part in the remainder of the desert fighting. The main drawback was rhe small turret where the commander also had to act as the gun loader. The Mks. III and V (engine difference only) had the turret enlarged to accomodate a loader and were issued in the first instance to troop leaders. Valentines were popular with their crews because they could absorb a lot of punishment whilst continuing to function.
