German success with self-propelled artillery in the Western Desert led 8th. Army HQ to request that similar equipment be urgently developed for British forces. The result was the Bishop, a 25pdr. gun-howitzer mounted on a Valentine tank chassis in a fixed box-like superstructure. 100 were ordered in November 1941 and another 50 in July 1942. Bishops saw action in the Western Desert, Tunisia, Sicily and in the opening phases of the campaign in Italy.
