Produced to counter the threat of the Soviet T-34 and KV series tanks, the 7.5cm Pak 40 was essentially a scaled-up version of the Pak 38. Barrel, breech and carriage were all similar in design and operation to the corresponding parts on the Pak 38, but the shield shape was simplified to ease production. The Pak 40 entered service in 1942 and served with distinction for the rest of the war; not only in it's towed form but also mounted, without it's carriage on a variety of self-propelled chassis. It was still in service in the Balkans in the 1990s.
