Development of the Stug III as an infantry support weapon started in 1936 and 50 of the externally identical Ausf. C and Ausf. D were produced between May and September 1941.
Increasingly, as the war progressed, Stugs were used in the anti-tank role. In February 1943 Hitler ordered that all Panzer IV, Panzer III and Stug IIIs armed with the short-barrelled 75mm gun should be upgunned whenever the opportunity occurred. Some of the 50 or so Stuk 37 armed Stugs were susequently re-armed with the Stuk 40 and Saukopfblende mantlet fitted to Stug Ausf. Gs.
