The main reason for the large number of marks of Sherman (M4 through M4A6) was the constant shortage of engines. There were never enough of one type to enable production to be standardised.
Vehicles armed with the US 105mm howitzer, M4A3 (as here) and M4 (CLASSIC kit 956) were used by both the Americans and the British. A total of 800 were produced with the vertical volute suspension system on both M4 and M4A3 chassis. A further 841 were built with the HVSS system.
The extra size of the 105mm ammunition restricted the number of rounds carried and these vehicles frequently towed the US M8 Armoured Trailer (Accessory Pak A36) carrying extra ammunition.
