At the time of the Normandy landings, Fireflies were the only British tanks capable of taking on the German Tigers and Panthers on anything approaching equal terms. Initially issued on the basis of one-per-troop, they gradually became available in increasing numbers.
Most Fireflies were converted M4A4s (British Sherman V), although M4s (British Sherman 1) were also used and a proportion of these were late-model "Hybrid" hulls with the cast/rolled hull front (CLASSIC kit 953). No convincing photographic evidence exists to show that other Sherman marks were used. The limiting factor was always the shortage of 17pdrs., not the availability of hulls.
